The Design
In the early days, Porsche decided to launch two race car projects. Type 547 would be a new engine, roughly the size of the current 356 four but offering far more development potential. Type 550 would be the new car that would carry Porsche's banner on the fields of competition. In 1955, the diminutive 550s took the first three places in their class, the fastest finishing fourth overall, behind only two Jaguar D-Types and an Aston Martin DB3S.
